Ubisoft announced its first NFT game a while back but quietly launched it with little fanfare. Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles is clearly not the leap into Web3 that fans were hoping for from a gaming giant — the project has taken on some of the worst aspects of Web3: mediocre quality, lack of PvE content, and, of course, pay-to-win elements.

Gameplay revolves around collecting and managing unique NFT heroes in PvP battles. These heroes, represented as digital assets, are available for purchase at prices ranging from $7 to $63,000, depending on their rarity and attributes. This directly affects balance, as players willing to invest gain a significant advantage.

Ubisoft deserves some respect for continuing to pursue innovation despite criticism, but releases like this seem to confirm critics’ views rather than advance Web3 in gaming.
